Competition for limiting resources and stress can magnify variance in fitness and therefore selection. But even in a common environment, the strength of selection can differ across the sexes, as their fitness is often limited by different factors. Indeed, most taxa show stronger selection in males, a bias often ascribed to intense competition for access to mating partners. This sex bias could reverberate on many aspects of evolution, from speed of adaptation to genome evolution. It is unclear, however, whether stronger opportunity for selection in males is a pattern robust to sex-specific stress or resource limitation. We test this in the model species Callosobruchus maculatus by comparing female and male opportunity for selection (i) with and without limitation of quality oviposition sites, and (ii) under delayed age at oviposition. Decreasing the abundance of the resource key to females or increasing their reproductive age was challenging, as shown by a reduction in mean fitness, but opportunity for selection remained stronger in males across all treatments, and even more so when oviposition sites were limiting. This suggests that males remain the more variable sex independent of context, and that the opportunity for selection through males is indirectly affected by female-specific resource limitation. 相似文献

Codons expanded by a silent position (quadruplet or tetracodons) may solve the conundrum that at life's origins, the weak tricodon–anticodon interactions could not promote translation in the absence of complex ribosomes. Modern genomes have isolated tetracodons resulting from insertion mutations. Some bioinformatic analyses suggest that tetracoding stretches overlap with regular mitochondrial protein coding genes. These tetragenes are probably decoded by (antisense) tRNAs with expanded anticodons. They are GC-rich, which produce stronger basepairs than A:T interactions, suggesting expression at high temperatures. The hypothesis that tetracoding is an adaptation to high temperatures is tested here by comparing predicted mitochondrial tetracoding in Lepidosauria (lizards, amphisbaenia, and Sphenodon), in relation to body temperature, expecting more tetracoding in species with high body temperature. The association between tRNAs with expanded anticodons and tetracoding previously described for mammals and Drosophila is confirmed for Lepidosauria. Independent evidence indicates that tetracoding increases with body temperature, supporting the hypothesis that tetracoding is an adaptation for efficient translation when conditions (temperature) make triplet codon-anticodons too unstable to allow efficient protein elongation. 相似文献

The second parity rule of Chargaff (A≈T and G≈C within one strand) holds all over the living world with minor exceptions. It is maintained with higher accuracy for long sequences. The question addressed in the article is how different sequence types, with different biases from the parity, contribute to the general effect. It appears that the sequence segments with biases of opposite sign are intermingled, so that with sufficient sequence lengths the parity is established. The parity rule seems to be a cumulative result of a number of independent processes in the genome evolution, with the parity as their intrinsic property. Symmetrical appearance of simple repeats and of Alu sequences in the human DNA strands, and other contributions to the Chargaff parity II rule are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract The octahedral complex tetraammine(chloroaquo)cobalt(III) dichloride is shown to be the HCl hydrolysis product of both P1,2-bidentate tetraammine(pyrophosphato)cobalt(III) [CO(NH3)4HP207 or CoPP] and bidentate tetraammine(phosphato)cobalt(III) [Co(NH3)4P04or CoP]. The complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna21 with cell dimensions α=13.033(2)Å, b=6.710(1) Å, and c=10.318(2)Å; the crystal structure was refined to a final disagreement index of 0.033. The average of the four Co-N distances is 1.944±6Å. The Co-Cl distance is 2.257(2)Å and the Co-O(W) distance is 1.971(4)Å. Both protons of the coordinated water molecule are engaged in strong hydrogen bonds to the two nonbonded chloride counterions with 0(W)-C1 distances of 3.087(6)Å and 3.123(6)Å. Each nonbonded chloride is engaged in seven hydrogen bonding interactions resulting from the high ratio of hydrogen bond donors to acceptors in the CoP structure. Cobalt bisphosphate (CoP2) is the final enzyme hydrolysis product when CoPP is used as substrate in the yeast inorganic pyrophosphatase reaction. The bridge oxygen atom is the site of initial CoPP cleavage both, for HCl catalyzed hydrolysis as well as for enzyme catalyzed hydrolysis. 相似文献

Our environment is stressed with a load of heavy and toxic metals. Microbes, abundant in our environment, are found to adapt well to this metal-stressed condition. A comparative study among five Cupriavidus/Ralstonia genomes can offer a better perception of their evolutionary mechanisms to adapt to these conditions. We have studied codon usage among 1051 genes common to all these organisms and identified 15 optimal codons frequently used in highly expressed genes present within 1051 genes. We found the core genes of Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 have a different optimal codon choice for arginine, glycine and alanine in comparison with the other four bacteria. We also found that the synonymous codon usage bias within these 1051 core genes is highly correlated with their gene expression. This supports that translational selection drives synonymous codon usage in the core genes of these genomes. Synonymous codon usage is highly conserved in the core genes of these five genomes. The only exception among them is C. metallidurans CH34. This genomewide shift in synonymous codon choice in C. metallidurans CH34 may have taken place due to the insertion of new genes in its genomes facilitating them to survive in heavy metal containing environment and the co-evolution of the other genes in its genome to achieve a balance in gene expression. Structural studies indicated the presence of a longer N-terminal region containing a copper-binding domain in the cupC proteins of C. metallidurans CH3 that helps it to attain higher binding efficacy with copper in comparison with its orthologs. 相似文献

To date, all clinical variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) patients are homozygous for methionine at polymorphic codon 129 (129M/M) of the prion protein (PrP) gene. However, the appearance of asymptomatic secondary vCJD infection in individuals with a PRNP codon 129 genotype other than M/M and transmission studies using animal models have raised the concern that all humans might be susceptible to vCJD prions, especially via secondary infection. To reevaluate this possibility and to analyze in detail the transmission properties of vCJD prions to transgenic animals carrying distinct codon 129 genotype, we performed intracerebral inoculation of vCJD prions to humanized knock-in mice carrying all possible codon 129 genotypes (129M/M, 129M/V, or 129V/V). All humanized knock-in mouse lines were susceptible to vCJD infection, although the attack rate gradually decreased from 129M/M to 129M/V and to 129V/V. The amount of PrP deposition including florid/amyloid plaques in the brain also gradually decreased from 129M/M to 129M/V and to 129V/V. The biochemical properties of protease-resistant abnormal PrP in the brain and transmissibility of these humanized mouse-passaged vCJD prions upon subpassage into knock-in mice expressing bovine PrP were not affected by the codon 129 genotype. These results indicate that individuals with the 129V/V genotype may be more susceptible to secondary vCJD infection than expected and may lack the neuropathological characteristics observed in vCJD patients with the 129M/M genotype. Besides the molecular typing of protease-resistant PrP in the brain, transmission studies using knock-in mice carrying bovine PrP may aid the differential diagnosis of secondary vCJD infection, especially in individuals with the 129V/V genotype. 相似文献

Dominance style, the level of tolerance displayed by dominant individuals toward subordinate ones, is exhibited along a continuum from despotic to relaxed. It is a useful concept to describe the nature of dominance relationships in macaque species and it bridges among multiple features of dominance hierarchies, aggression, kinship and conflict resolution. Capuchins share many behavioral similarities with Old World monkeys and like macaques, may exhibit a suite of covarying characteristics related to dominance. Here, we provide an assessment of dominance style by examining measures of aggression and kin bias in 22 adult female white‐faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) in three social groups at Santa Rosa Sector, Costa Rica. We found that bidirectionality of aggression was low (mean = 6.9% ± SE 1.6). However, there were few significant correlations between kin relatedness and social behavior (approaching, grooming, proximity, and co‐feeding), even though the intensity of kin bias in grooming was moderate and higher in the larger group. We conclude that patterns of aggression and kin‐biased behavior in our study animals are dissimilar to the patterns of covariation observed in macaque species. While unidirectional aggression suggests a despotic dominance style, the moderate expression of kin bias suggests an intermediate to relaxed classification when compared with results from an analysis of 19 macaque species. Additional studies of capuchin species and behaviors associated with dominance style (i.e., conciliatory tendencies) would help to create a comparative framework for the genus Cebus, and allow for more detailed cross‐species comparison of dominance relationships across all primates. Sperm competition (SC) is a major component of sexual selection that enhances intra‐ and intersexual conflicts and may trigger rapid adaptive evolution of sexual characters. The actual role of SC on rapid evolution, however, is poorly understood. Besides, the relative contribution of distinctive features of the mating system to among species variation in the strength of SC remains unclear. Here, we assessed the strength of SC and mating system factors that may account for it in the closely related species Drosophila buzzatii and Drosophila koepferae. Our analyses reveal higher incidence of multiple paternity and SC risk in D. buzzatii wild‐inseminated females. The estimated number of fathers per brood was 3.57 in D. buzzatii and 1.95 in D. koepferae. In turn, the expected proportion of females inseminated by more than one male was 0.89 in D. buzzatii and 0.58 in D. koepferae. Laboratory experiments show that this pattern may be accounted for by the faster rate of stored sperm usage observed in D. koepferae and by the greater female remating rate exhibited by D. buzzatii. We also found that the male reproductive cost of SC is also higher in D. buzzatii. After a female mated with a second male, first‐mating male fertility was reduced by 71.4% in D. buzzatii and only 33.3% in D. koepferae. Therefore, we may conclude that postmating sexual selection via SC is a stronger evolutionary force in D. buzzatii than in its sibling. 相似文献
